Parents, we need your help. We are weak in some areas of reading: summarizing, main idea, understanding author’s purpose and comprehension. Each night when your child reads, please remember to ask comprehension questions and/or have your student write down summaries and main idea.
Please, don’t forget you can access released items and tests on the NCDPI website. http://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing/eog/

Pomander Balls from Colonial America

Today we made Pomander Balls which is an orange or apple poked with cloves and covered with cinnamon. It was used during Colonial times to keep the house fragrant. We had such a great time and loved how the room smelled fresh with cinnamon and citrus. Of course, Ms. McLaughlin forgot to take photos!

Photos from our measurement activity

This week we finished up measurement by seeing how many ounces were in a 3 Quart juice container and in a Gallon juice Container. We broke up into two groups and first predicted a number of how many 16 oz plastic cups will equal 3 Quarts and 1 Gallon. Group 1 had the 3 Quart container of juice and thought it would take 5 16 oz cups to equal 3 quarts. They later decided they wanted to add 3 more cups. In the end, it took them about 6 and a half 16 oz cups to equal 3 Q. They calculated that it was 104 ounces. The acutal amount is 96 ounces.

Group 2 had the 1 gallon container of juice and thought it would take 10 cups to equal 1 gallon. In the end, it took them 9 and a half cups to equal 1 gallon. They calculated that out to be 152 ounces. It was actually 128 ounces. Both groups worked very hard on their math and on finding equivalent measures. They were able to understand that although the cups were not exact and the juice was not poured correctly, that  16 oz = 2 cups. They made great predictions!!
